The Soul is indeed a computer-animated film released by Walt Disney Pictures in 2020. It was developed by Pixar Animation Studios. Jamie Foxx, Tina Fey, Graham Norton, Rachel House, Alice Braga, Richard Ayoade, Phylicia Rashad, Donnell Rawlings, Questlove, as well as Angela Bassett feature inside the movie, which is helmed by Pete Docter as well as co-directed by Kemp Powers. The plot revolves around Joe Gardner (Foxx), a middle school music teacher who attempts to reunite his soul and body after they have been mistakenly separated shortly before his breakout role as a jazz musician.

Soul was born in January 2016 as a result of Docter’s reflections on the origins of human personalities as well as the idea of determinism. With Mike Jones and Powers, he co-wrote the screenplay. The movie’s producers met with a number of jazz artists, notably Herbie Hancock as well as Terri Lyne Carrington, and animated the movie’s musical segments using Jon Batiste’s sessions as inspiration. The movie’s score was also written by musicians Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, in addition to Batiste’s original jazz songs.

On October 11, 2020, Soul had its world debut at the London Film Festival. The film was scheduled to be released in theatres on November 20, but that was postponed owing of the COVID-19 epidemic. Soul was instead released on December 25 as a direct-to-streaming film on Disney+, as well as in cinemas in countries without access to the streaming service. It was the first Pixar feature-length picture not to have a wide theatrical release, as well as the first to be branded as a Disney+ Original. The media praised Soul for its animation, plot, voice acting, and musical composition. The movie was chosen one of the top ten movies of 2020 by organisations such as the National Board of Review as well as the American Film Institute.

Soul topped the 93rd Academy Awards season having three nominations (two of which it won) and a slew of awards.

For the metaphysical elements of the movie, American artists Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross of Nine Inch Nails provided an ambient score, whereas Batiste composed a variety of unique jazz tunes for the New York City-based segments. Batiste aimed to produce “user-friendly jazz,” which he described as “genuine” but approachable to a wide range of listeners. Reznor and Ross were called in when sound designer Ren Klyce, who’d already previously worked well with team on David Fincher films, recommended them.

Soul’s soundtrack as well as original songs were published on two distinct vinyl-only albums, as well as being collected into a single digital album. The Impressions initially recorded “It’s All Right,” which Batiste performs at the close of the film. A second rendition of the song, a duet between Batiste and British soul singer Celeste, was released as a non-album single alongside the three albums but was not featured in the film’s soundtrack.

Soul was released on Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, DVD, and digital download on March 23, 2021, by Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment. Behind-the-scenes featurettes, audio commentary, and deleted sequences are included in physical versions.
