The MET Costume Institute to have Martin Scorsese and other as well

This year’s Met Gala will have a significant Hollywood presence, and not only on the red carpet. The event will be launched in May by a group of famous cinema filmmakers including Sofia Coppola, Martin Scorsese, Regina King, and last year’s Oscar winner Chloé Zhao. Janicza Bravo, Julie Dash, Autumn de Wilde, and Tom Ford, the famed fashion designer and film director, are the other four.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, star curator Andrew Bolton released a roster of eight directors on Tuesday who would create “cinematic vignettes” in the period rooms of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s American Wing. In America: An Anthology of Fashion, the most recent exhibition, is really the second half of a significant two-part show that explores the origins of American fashion. This show, which will premiere on May 2 in conjunction with what the museum hopes will be a full-scale gala, will comprise roughly 100 specimens of men’s and women’s dress from the 19th to the mid-late 20th centuries.

Part One, which launched in September and will continue on display at the Anna Wintour Costume Center, looks at “unfamiliar sartorial themes filtered through the minds of some of America’s most innovative cinema filmmakers,” according to Bolton in remarks Tuesday.

Each of the eight filmmakers will construct their own “fictional cinematic sequences, or ‘frozen frames,'” within certain American Wing period rooms, according to Bolton and museum director Max Hollein, who spoke to the press on Tuesday. The show would focus on essential persons who have shaped American fashion throughout history, the majority of whom are women and many of whom have been forgotten by history, such as tailors and dressmakers.

Martin Scorsese art will be displayed inside a Frank Lloyd Wright-designed 20th-century living room, while King’s will be displayed in a 19th-century parlour from Richmond, Virginia, according to Bolton. De Wilde’s will be displayed in the Baltimore and Benkard Rooms; Zhao’s will be displayed in a Shaker Retiring Room from the 1830s; Bravo’s will be displayed in the Rococo Revival Parlor and Gothic Revival Library; Coppola’s will be displayed in the McKim, Mead and White Stair Hall and Worsham-Rockefeller Dressing Room; Dash’s will be displayed in the Greek Revival Parlor

Six “case studies” will be included in the galleries, according to Bolton, providing an in-depth look — “almost forensic assessments.” The May gala’s celebrity co-chairs are yet to be revealed. Actor Timothée Chalamet, musician Billie Eilish, poet Amanda Gorman, and tennis player Naomi Osaka were among those honoured in September.

The MET Gala is a big moneymaker for the museum, and it is the principal source of revenue for the Costume Institute. The public may see In America: An Anthology of Fashion on May 7, five days after the gala on May 2, and it will be open until September 5.
