So, Indian music is known as Hindustani music. It is one of the two major forms of South Asian classical music, and it is mostly found in the northern three-quarters of the subcontinent, where Indo-Aryan languages are spoken. Beginning in the 13th century, when the Islamic invasion of northern India imported extremely important Arab and Persian musical techniques, the two systems increasingly separated.

The traditions split and developed into various forms under the Mughal reign of the Indian subcontinent. Carnatic performances tend to be brief compositions, but Hindustani music encourages improvisation and exploration of all parts of a raga.
