Rohit Shetty, one of Bollywood’s most well-known filmmakers, has launched a biopic based on the life of former Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria, including some of the city’s most decorated cops. On his social media account today, the director broke the news and uploaded a photo with the former officer. Rohit grinned broadly as he stood next to the courageous Mumbai cop, holding a book on the decorated officer in his palm. Rohit has teamed up with Reliance Entertainment for this biography. The biography will be based on his successful work achievements and would be directed by Rohit Shetty, an acclaimed director.

Rohit took to social media to share a photo with him and wrote, “From solving the 93 Mumbai blast case, fearlessly facing the Mumbai underworld during the late 90s to interrogating the lone surviving terrorist, Ajmal Kasab & standing strong for his city during the 26/11 attacks…Rakesh Maria has been a name synonymous with courage and valour! Feel honoured to be bringing this real-life supercop’s journey to screen!!!@rohitshettypicturez.”

Talking about the announcement, producer & director, Rohit Shetty said in a statement, “Rakesh Maria: The man who stared terror in the face for 36 years!! His incredible journey spans all the way from the 1993 blasts in Mumbai, the underworld menace, to the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks in 2008. Feel truly honoured to be bringing this real-life super cop’s brave & fearless journey to the screen!!”

Rakesh Maria also expressed his opinion on Rohit’s intention to make a film about his time as a cop.

“It is exciting to re-live the journey, especially when piloted by a brilliant director like Rohit Shetty. More than the nostalgia, it’s also a valuable opportunity to place before the people the extraordinary work of the Mumbai Police when facing tough challenges and working against all odds” he explained.

Rakesh Maria, for example, passed the Civil Services test in the 1981 class. As Deputy Commissioner of Police in 1993, he also solved the Bombay serial explosions case (Traffic). Later, he worked for the Mumbai Police Department as a Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime). Aside from that, he also solved the twin bombings at the Gateway of India and Zaveri Bazaar in 2003 and was tasked with interrogating 26/11 terrorist Ajmal Kasab.

Even celebrities backed the filmmaker, including Jacqueline Fernandez, who set out to produce a documentary on the heroic cop’s life. However, Rohit just revealed his OTT debut with Sidharth Malhotra, Vivek Oberoi, and Shilpa Shetty in the Indian Police Force. Cirkus, starring Ranveer Singh, Pooja Hegde, and Jacqueline, is his next movie.
