Thomas Leo Clancy Jr. or Tom Clancy was an author from the United States. His espionage and military-science stories set during and after the Cold War are his most well-known works. His name also was utilised on ghostwritten movie scripts, factual books on military matters with co-authors on occasion, and video games. He was vice-chairman of the Baltimore Orioles’ community activities and public affairs committees, as well as a part-owner of his local Major League Baseball team, the Baltimore Orioles of the American League.

He started his writing career in 1984, when he sold his first military thriller novel, The Hunt for Red October, for $5,000 to the modest academic Naval Institute Press in Annapolis, Maryland.

The Hunt for Red October (1984), Patriot Games (1987), Clear and Present Danger (1989), and The Sum of All Fears (1991) were all adapted into films that were economically successful. Clancy’s most renowned fictional character, Jack Ryan, has been represented by actors such as Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck, Chris Pine, and John Krasinski. Willem Dafoe, Liev Schreiber, and Michael B. Jordan have all played John Clark, another well-known character of his. Games like Ghost Recon, Rainbow Six, The Division, and Splinter Cell were all influenced by Tom Clancy’s work. The Jack Ryan series has indeed been maintained by his family property through with a variety of authors after Clancy’s death in 2013.

Red Storm Rising, a Cold War epic, was co-written alongside Larry Bond, a fellow military novelist. Putnam published the book, which sold nearly a million copies its first year. Clancy had become the face of a Putnam publishing list that promoted authors such as Clancy who could produce a book every year. These were dubbed “repeaters” by his publisher, Phyllis E. Grann.
