Through a contribution from George Lucas as well as Mellody Hobson’s Hobson/Lucas Family Foundation, a Global Cinematic Arts Institute and Martin Scorsese virtual Production centre named after American Film Director Martin Scorsese will indeed be constructed at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, NYU announced the gift on Tuesday, calling it the “biggest contribution in the school’s history.” “We are happy to be able to commemorate our great friend Martin Scorsese,” Lucas and Hobson stated in a statement. The Scorsese Institute of Global Cinematic Arts will inspire generations of diverse, bright students with this contribution in his name, which honours his legacy as a defining American filmmaker.

Where narrative meets innovation, creative vision will come to life via time-honoured research as well as hands-on teaching on state-of-the-art digital technologies at the Institute.”

The Martin Scorsese Virtual Production Center will include studios and soundstages for instruction in cinematography as well as virtual production technology, such as video animation, performance capture, live compositing, as well as live in-camera visual effects.

The Martin Scorsese Department of Cinema Studies, which offers a degree in Moving Image Archiving and Preservation, would be renamed as just a result of the gift. A new endowed Martin Scorsese Chair of Cinema Studies will be established, as well as increased student assistance through the creation of a new permanent, endowed scholarship fund as well as yearly internship stipends.

Scorsese, who is also the founder and chairman of the Film Foundation, has long advocated for the preservation of films. “At this stage inside the technological development of cinema, when filmmakers of all orientations and obsessions use digital alteration for all kinds of reasons, virtual production represents a quantum leap forward,” the legendary filmmaker said in a statement, thanking Lucas, Hobson, as well as their foundation for their generosity of spirit and deed. It allows us to see what we’re doing as we work. The pace of virtual production allows us to see what we’re producing in real-time, whether we’re constructing an imagined world or re-creating a world that has passed us by. We can use it to think.”

“Martin Scorsese’s capacity to examine the human condition with depth, subtlety, and sensitivity is unrivalled,” said NYU President Andrew Hamilton. Few, if any, directors can equal his illustrious past or his ability to experiment with new technologies while remaining faithful to his unique storytelling vision.”

“This incredible donation will enable our diverse, global graduates to study the cinematic past, and also to build our cinematic future,” said Tisch Dean Allyson Green.

Pretend It’s a City, directed by Martin Scorsese, was published on Netflix on January 8, 2021. Fran Lebowitz and Martin Scorsese star inside the series, which delves into her personal opinions and perspectives on New York City. Scorsese’s first documentary with Lebowitz, Public Speaking (2010), was released on HBO. Scorsese’s next project for Apple Studios is a biography about the Grateful Dead, starring Jonah Hill.
