Naseeruddin Shah’s Tough Love Changed My Career, Says Amruta Subhash

Acclaimed actor Amruta Subhash recently opened up about a career-defining moment that shattered her ego—but reshaped her craft. In an honest revelation, she recalled how veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah’s brutally honest feedback pushed her to grow as an artist.

In a candid interview with The Lallantop, Amruta shared how Naseer Saab watched her stage performance—twice. Expecting praise after audience applause, she was instead met with concern. “I was feeling proud. But he came to me and said, ‘Beta, I’m worried about you,’” Amruta recalled, stunned.

What followed was an acting masterclass. Naseeruddin didn’t mince words: “You’re doing the same trick for applause in every show. I’d rather watch you fail doing something new than repeat yourself for claps.” He even questioned whether the emotional breakdown her character portrayed was necessary, warning that repetition would end her career.

That moment, Amruta says, “shifted something in me.” It taught her to let go of performing for validation and dive into authenticity. Today, Amruta is a National Award winner with acclaimed roles in Gully Boy, Raman Raghav 2.0, and Dhamaka. Her most recent film Chidiya, co-starring Vinay Pathak, hit theatres on May 30—proof that raw honesty sometimes paves the way for real transformation.
