Netflix Announces Stranger Things Prequel for 2028
Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure will trace Henry Creel's path to becoming Vecna, with the Duffers and Kate Trefry attached.
Netflix is taking Stranger Things back to the beginning — before Hawkins, before the Upside Down, and before Vecna had a name. The streamer used Stranger Things Day on November 6 to confirm Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure, a live-action prequel set to arrive in 2028.
The announcement
The new series will unfold in Marion, Nevada, in 1955. It tracks Henry Creel in the years before he encounters the uncanny substance that unlocks his abilities and starts his turn into Vecna. In other words, this is a villain origin story rather than a sequel to the Hawkins saga.

Why a prequel now?
The original series wrapped on December 31, 2025, after five seasons. Rather than force another chapter in Hawkins, Netflix is treating Stranger Things as a franchise with room to move sideways. Other Worlds will be the fourth title in that universe, alongside the animated spin-off Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 and the stage production Stranger Things: First Shadow.
That matters for fans. Vecna was the main show’s final big bad, and his backstory has been hinted at but never fully mapped. A 1955 setting lets the creative team explore the character before the powers, before the experiments, and before the monster.
What to watch for
Kate Trefry is on board as showrunner and executive producer, which puts the mythology in steady hands. Joe Wright directing the first three episodes suggests the prequel may lean into a more cinematic style than the original’s small-town horror. New Mexico also gives the production a different landscape from Indiana’s forests.
The 2028 date is a long runway, but the announcement was deliberately placed on Stranger Things Day, the date the show’s own lore marks Will Byers’ 1983 disappearance. It is a fan-first rollout that gives the audience something to track while the wider universe takes shape.
Origin stories also give Netflix a way to keep one of its biggest intellectual properties active without waiting for a direct sequel. They reward longtime viewers while offering newcomers a self-contained entry point. If Other Worlds lands in 2028 with the same attention to detail, it could reset the franchise’s next phase.
