Johnny Depp Hints at Jack Sparrow Return to $4.5B Franchise
Johnny Depp says he is open to one final Pirates of the Caribbean film to send Jack Sparrow off on a better note, if the screenplay is right.

After years of fans assuming the door was shut, Johnny Depp has hinted he is willing to return as Captain Jack Sparrow for a sixth Pirates of the Caribbean film. The catch? He wants the story to give the franchise the farewell he believes it deserves.
It is a notable shift. Not long ago, even discussing Depp’s return felt like speculation. Now both the star and the producer are talking openly about the conditions that could make it happen.
While promoting his upcoming film Ebenezer, Depp told Entertainment Tonight that he is open to returning if the creative circumstances are right. As he put it:
“The only involvement I really want to have, truly, is just to send them off on a better note.”
Why Jerry Bruckheimer makes a return feel real
Depp’s public fallout with Disney made a comeback feel remote for years. But the actor separates the studio drama from his relationship with producer Jerry Bruckheimer, who has guided the franchise from the start.
Depp said:
“I will go to work with Bruckheimer tomorrow for anything… if it’s Jerry, I trust him. We have a deep friendship.”
That loyalty matters because Bruckheimer is the one trying to land the screenplay.
Bruckheimer told Entertainment Weekly that the page is the real gatekeeper:
“If he likes the way the part’s written, I think he would do it. It’s all about what’s on the page… We are still working on a screenplay. We want to make it. We just got to get the right screenplay. We haven’t quite gotten there yet, but we’re close.”
A franchise too big to close quietly
Between 2003 and 2017, five Pirates of the Caribbean films grossed more than $4.5 billion worldwide. That number explains why a sixth film is still on the table even after the split with Depp made headlines.
Here is where things stand:
- Depp’s stance: open to one more film, but only to improve the send-off.
- Bruckheimer’s stance: wants Depp back, but the script comes first.
- Current status: no deal signed, though the screenplay is close.
What happens next
The phrase to watch is “better note.” Depp is not asking for a comeback for its own sake; he is asking for the material to justify it. That raises the bar, and it is why Bruckheimer’s update matters: the team is close but not finished.
If the screenplay finally lands, the Black Pearl could sail with its rightful captain one last time. Until then, this is a strong signal, not a signed contract.
