Arjan Bajwa: Mental Health Is as Important as Physical Health

Arjan Bajwa opens up on World Mental Health Day about why mental exhaustion is harder to fix than physical tiredness and when to step back.

Arjan Bajwa: Mental health is as important as physical health

Sleep fixes the body, but not always the mind. That is the line Arjan Bajwa drew as he spoke about burnout on World Mental Health Day. The actor, known for Rustom, Fashion, Kabir Singh and Demon Hunters, and next to be seen in Madhur Bhandarkar’s The Wives, said mental health is “just as important, if not more than physical health.”

Burnout doesn’t always look exhausted

His distinction is simple. Physical exhaustion can be handled by sleeping or taking some time off. Mental exhaustion, he said, “never ends.” Even when a person is resting or completely disconnected from work and social life, the mind keeps working.

That is why he advises people to look inward rather than assuming rest will repair everything. The warning signs are specific:

  • Mental peace feels disturbed.
  • Certain issues keep looping in your thoughts.
  • Something keeps bothering you even after you step away.

When those signals appear, Arjan said, it is time to take a step back. “That’s when you know you are moving towards burnout.”

The weight of being watched

He was also candid about how public scrutiny sharpens the pressure. In a profession where “everything is being measured, scrutinised and noticed,” the experience can definitely become overwhelming. But he does not frame that as an excuse.

“Personal and professional expectations are a part of the job that you have chosen, so you can’t run away from them,” he said. His answer is that anyone choosing such a career has to be mentally strong enough to carry the responsibility, or not be in that space at all.

Still, Arjan acknowledged the balancing act. He pointed to the need to remind yourself that you chose this path, and that hiding from it is not an option.

Protecting the private space

His practical advice is to build a counterweight. Maintain balance, keep “some kind of sanity” and find peace in your personal space. That, he said, helps neutralise the overwhelming effect of the day.

For fans who watch stars closely, the message is bigger than one actor’s routine. It is a reminder that the polished, measured world of entertainment carries a mental load that does not switch off with a good night’s sleep.
