Today, February 28th, marks the 25th anniversary of Anil Kapoor’s 1997 film Judaai. In addition to Kapoor, the film featured Sridevi and Urmila Matondkar in key parts. Judaai had an unusual plot, especially given the time period in which it was released. The film followed the storey of a money-hungry wife who decides to swap her husband for money to another lady. Despite the unconventional and experimental premise, the film was well welcomed by the crowd. Now, on the 25th anniversary of Judaai, Anil Kapoor has admitted that he first turned down the film because he couldn’t identify with the role.
However, he only consented to do it because of familial pressure. Anil Kapoor recently told Hindustan Times that he couldn’t connect with his role in Judaai. The actor said, “I kept on saying no to the film as I could not connect with my character. I had a lot of pressure from family and the family production company as we were going through tough times financially after the debacle of Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja,” Kapoor added, “I am glad I said yes, as the intention was to do it for the family”. Anil further mentioned that he had a great time working with the “exceptionally talented” Sridevi and Urmila, whose working style, Anil said, “had its own charm”.
The actor was also asked if anyone tried to discourage him from taking on such roles. Anil responded by listing a number of his films, including Parinda (1989), 1942: A Love Story (1994), Mr India (1987), and Pukar (2000), among others, and stating that he has always avoided ‘run of the mill’ pictures. This, according to the actor, is the cause for his long career in the film industry.
