She was a theatre and screen actress of Canadian-American descent. She is commonly referred to as the “first movie star,” and it was widely assumed that she was the first film actress to be publicly identified until evidence uncovered in 2019 revealed that the first-named film celebrity was French actor Max Linder. She is the first actress in the world.
She was known as the “Biograph Girl” at the height of her career in the 1910s for her work as one of the main women in silent films produced by the Biograph Company. Throughout her career, she acted in around 300 films for a variety of studios.
Talking about her early life, Florence Annie Bridgwood was the youngest of three children born in Hamilton, Ontario, to carriage maker George Bridgwood and vaudeville actress Charlotte “Lotta” Bridgwood (née Dunn). Charlotte Bridgwood immigrated to Canada as a kid with her family from Ireland during the Great Famine. Lotta Lawrence was the leading woman and director of the Lawrence Dramatic Company. Lawrence made her stage debut alongside her mother in a song and dance routine at the age of three. She began acting in dramatic plays alongside her mother and other members of the Lawrence Dramatic Company when she was old enough to memorise lines of speech.
Lawrence’s mother eliminated tear-jerking plays like Dora Thorne and East Lynne from the company’s repertory because they began to depress Lawrence. Lawrence noted that while she liked performing on stage at her mother’s request, she did not appreciate the travelling that all vaudeville artists were forced to do. Lawrence had acquired the moniker “Baby Flo, the Child Wonder” by the age of six.
