De Niro studied acting at HB Studio, Stella Adler Conservatory, and Lee Strasberg’s Actors Studio in New York City, where he was born. His first significant appearance was in Greetings (1968), and he rose to prominence in the sports drama Bang the Drum Slowly as a baseball player (1973). Mean Streets was his first collaboration with Scorsese, in which he played small-time crook “Johnny Boy.”

De Niro’s appearance as young Vito Corleone in Francis Ford Coppola’s crime epic The Godfather Part II (1974), which earned him an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, catapulted him to stardom. He received two Academy Award nods for Best Actor for his roles as Travis Bickle in Taxi Driver (1976) and also as a soldier inside the Vietnam War film The Deer Hunter (1978).

De Niro earned his first Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Jake LaMotta in Martin Scorsese’s historical movie Raging Bull (1980). Inside the films Goodfellas as well as Awakenings, De Niro played mobster Jimmy Conway, a catatonic patient within drama Awakenings, as well as a criminal in the psychological thriller Cape Fear (1991). De Niro’s performances were praised in all three movies. Following that, he acted in This Boy’s Life (1993) and directed his first motion picture, A Bronx Tale, in 1993. Heat as well as Casino, both crime flicks, are among his other critical hits (both 1995).

He received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal in David O.
