Where is the city of West Hollywood located? – Tap to know

Hollywood

The city of West Hollywood is located in Los Angeles County, California. It is the home of the Sunset Strip, which was founded in 1984. It had a population of 34,399 people according to the 2010 U.S. Census. It is regarded as one of the most well-known homosexual communities in the United States.

The majority of history accounts of West Hollywood begin with European colonisation in the late 18th century, when Portuguese explorer Joo Rodrigues Cabrilho landed offshore and claimed the previously populated territory for Spain. Around 5,000 indigenous people from the Tongva Indian tribe canoed out to welcome the ship. The Tongva tribe was indeed a hunter-gatherer people noted for their respect for dancing and bravery. By 1771, the illnesses brought into it by Europeans from across vast oceans had wreaked havoc on these indigenous people. The tribe name was altered to “Gabrielinos” by the Spanish mission system, in honour of the Mission of San Gabriel. Early in 1770, Gaspar de Portola’s Mexican expeditionary army paused at what would become West Hollywood, just south of the Santa Monica Mountains, to collect pitch (brea in Spanish) from tar pits to waterproof their possessions and to hear Mass.

The pitch is said to have been burnt by the Gabrielinos as a source of energy.

By 1780, the “Sunset Strip” had become the primary link between El Pueblo de Los Angeles and all ranches west of the Pacific Ocean. During the next one hundred years, this area changed ownership several times, and it was given titles like “La Brea” and “Plummer” that are recorded in historical documents. The majority of this land was once part of Rancho La Brea, and it was subsequently purchased by the Henry Hancock family.

During the latter decade of the nineteenth century, the town of “Sherman” saw its first major land reconstruction, which considerably hastened the region’s growth. Moses Sherman and his partners of the Los Angeles Pacific Train, an interurban railroad line that subsequently became part of the Pacific Electric Railway system, founded the community of “Sherman” in what would later become West Hollywood. The railroad’s primary shops, train yards, and “car barns” were all located in Sherman. This village attracted a large number of railroad workers from the working class.
