Michael is a high school graduate who lives in North Hollywood, a suburb in Los Angeles’ valley region. His hopes of becoming a professional skater are continuously dashed by his father, who urges Michael to attend college and find a secure career. Adolf, a buddy of Michael’s, wants to stop skating after high school and work full-time.
Jay, another of his close friends, wants to be sent to college as well as skate at the very same time.
Michael gets discovered by two professional skaters, Nolan Knox and Isiah Jordan, at a skate contest at North Hollywood Skate Plaza. Michael is late for his Water Polo Practice after this competition. He gets into a confrontation with a teammate on the water polo team and leaves shortly after. After his last Water Polo session, Michael runs into Rachel in the parking lot and informs her that he has quit the team to pursue a career as a professional skater. Michael’s father trains him how to fight when he returns home later that night.
Michael and Rachel reconnect at Bob’s Big Boy, a neighbourhood eatery. Michael makes an attempt to speak with Rachel, despite Jay and Adolf mocking him the entire time. The next day, Michael returns to NoHo Skatepark and speaks with Walker, a local skatepark bum who is friends with Nolan and Isiah. Michael expresses his desire to skate with Nolan and Isiah. Walker is receptive to the notion, but is also put off by Michael’s overzealous pursuit of the chance. Michael, Jay, and Adolf continue to hang out in NoHo, where they engage in water balloon battles, pond swimming, and, of course, skating.
