Where is Hollywood Maryland Located?

Hollywood Maryland

Hollywood Maryland is indeed an unincorporated settlement in the United States, situated in St. Mary’s County. It was given its name in 1867 by a storeowner at Thompson’s General Store in Hollywood’s Uniontown neighbourhood, who needed a name for such store’s post office. The massive holly tree erected at the front of the business led the store owner to call the post office Hollywood.

The congregation of St. John Francis Regis Catholic Church, which has been established in 1690, is one of Hollywood’s most notable structures. On the banks of the Patuxent River, the region also features the nationally renowned Sotterley Plantation.

Sotterley was originally founded in 1703 by rich planter James Bowles, as well as later passed through the hands of former Maryland Governor George Plater and Louisa Satterlee (daughter of J.P. Morgan) as well as her spouse. Resurrection Manor, a recently demolished manor house believed to be being built around 1640 by Thomas Cornwalleys, the grandson of General Lord Cornwallis, which submitted to George Washington there at Battle of Yorktown it during the American Revolutionary War, too is located in the town.

Hollywood is today a tiny rural village with huge fields producing soybeans, corn, hay, grains, wheat, and once tobacco. It now houses an industrial park with branch offices for companies including Northrop Grumman. The neighbouring Patuxent River Naval Air Station has a training and convention centre for engineers. There are several routes that go to the Patuxent River’s coast. The St. Mary’s County Commissioners have direct control over Hollywood, which is not an established town.

On Joy Chapel Road in Hollywood, there is a school called Hollywood Elementary School, which is organised into several “houses” that each focus on a particular culture from across the world. St. John Francis Regis Catholic School is also located in Hollywood.

Under the direction of Rev. Joseph M. Johnson, S.J., St. John’s School was founded on September 12, 1923. Grades one through four were taught in the church’s sacristy, while grades five through eight were taught in a second storey chamber above the sacristy.

The Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, Kentucky, staffed the school from the 1920s through the 1980s. The white frame component of the school was finished as a four-room school structure on May 20, 1924. A masonry extension with two classrooms, an auditorium, and a full basement was finished on June 15, 1952. The remaining auditorium area was transformed to a library after part of the auditorium was partitioned to construct two extra classrooms.
