Rurouni Kenshin

Nobuhiro Watsuki wrote and drew Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Swordsman Romantic Story, a Japanese manga series. The narrative begins in Japan during the 11th year of the Meiji period (1878) and follows Hitokiri Battosai, a former Bakumatsu assassin. Hitokiri Battosai vanishes after his work against the bakufu to become Himura Kenshin, a wandering warrior who protects the people of Japan while vowing never to take another life. Watsuki created the series in order to create a shnen manga that was unlike any other at the time, having Kenshin being a former assassin as well as the plot becoming more serious since it progressed. Atonement, peace, as well as romance, are important themes in the manga.

From April 1994 to September 1999, the manga was published in Shueisha’s Weekly Shnen Jump magazine.

The work was originally published in 28 tankbon volumes, but was later reissued in twenty-two kanzenban volumes. The manga was converted into an anime television series by Studio Gallop, Studio Deen, and SPE Visual Works, which aired in Japan from January 1996 to September 1998. Two series of original video animations (OVAs) were also made in addition to the animated feature picture. The first was a sequel to the manga, while the second was an adaptation of stories from the manga that were not included in the anime.

Several Rurouni Kenshin drawings and guidebooks have been released, and writer Kaoru Shizuka has written three official light novels for Shueisha. Many video games for the PlayStation, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation Portable systems have also been produced. In 2012, a successful live-action theatrical film adaption with limited worldwide screenings was released.

Viz Media has given the manga, and also the first light novel and guidebook, a comprehensive North American distribution. In some English translations, Rurouni Kenshin is dubbed “Wandering Samurai.”

As of 2019, the Rurouni Kenshin manga has sold over 72 million copies, making it one of the most popular manga series. Various newspapers have praised the series for the manga, anime, and other media, with both receiving positive feedback on the characters’ designs and historical backdrop. Watsuki started a direct sequel, Rurouni Kenshin: The Hokkaido Arc, in Jump Square in 2017.

Kenshin’s deed exemplifies the series’ fundamental theme of responsibility, as he seeks to atone for all the people he killed during the Bakumatsu by assisting innocent people while carrying a non-lethal sword.
