DC Universe

The DC Universe is an American media franchise and shared universe centred on a series of superhero films produced by DC Films and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, based on characters that first appeared in American comic books published by DC Comics. Comic books, short films, novels, and video games are all part of the franchise. The DCEU was created by combining narrative concepts, locales, actors, and characters, much like the original DC Universe in comic books.

Since 2002, when Wolfgang Petersen was supposed to helm a crossover of the Batman and Superman film series, Warner Bros. had planned to bring other DC Comics superheroes together in movies. Following the cancellation of a planned Justice League film and the success of The Dark Knight in 2008, Warner Bros. opted to focus on individual brands while attempting to compete with Marvel Studios’ Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The DCEU was supposed to revolve around five movies helmed by Zack Snyder, but DC Films downplayed the shared aspect of the universe in 2018 to give individual directors more liberty.

Man of Steel (2013), a reboot of the Superman movie franchise, was the first DCEU movie, followed by Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), a remake of the Batman movie franchise. Suicide Squad (2016), Wonder Woman (2017), Justice League (2017), Aquaman (2018), Shazam! (2019), Birds of Prey (2020), Wonder Woman 1984 (2020), and The Suicide Squad (2020) were the films that followed (2021). In 2022, Black Adam, The Flash, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will be released, followed by Shazam! Fury of the Gods in 2023. In addition, with Zack Snyder’s Justice League in 2021, the DCEU extended to include exclusive releases on HBO Max.

Blue Beetle, Green Lantern Corps, Static Shock, and Supergirl are among the movies set for release between 2022 and 2023 on the studio’s roster.

With approximately $5.8 billion in global box office receipts, the DCEU is indeed the eleventh-highest-grossing movie series of all time. Aquaman, the company’s highest-grossing picture, grossed over $1.15 billion globally, making it the highest-grossing DC Comics-based movie ever. The DCEU has had a mixed reception from critics.

Following the naming tradition of the already existing Marvel Cinematic Universe, fans and the media dubbed the universe the “DC Cinematic Universe” upon the introduction of the movie franchise (MCU). On July 1, 2015, in a storey about Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice for Entertainment Weekly, Keith Staskiewicz playfully invented the term “DC Extended UniverseTM.”
