Karan Johar has urged the Delhi government to reopen theatres

On Thursday, Bollywood director and producer Karan Johar asked the Delhi government for allowing theatres to reopen following the state’s yellow notice. In light of the growing COVID-19 instances as well as an increase within Omicron variant inside the city, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal issued tight restrictions on Tuesday. Spas, gyms, as well as movie theatres that were previously functioning at 50 per cent capacity, would be closed, according to CM Kejriwal. This declaration comes following a test positive rate of moreover 0.5 per cent in the national capital over the last two days.

Inside a Twitter tweet, Karan Johar asked the government to allow theatres to operate, writing, “We urge the Delhi Government to allow cinemas to operate. Cinemas are equipped with better ability to ensure a hygienic environment while maintaining social distancing norms as compared to other out-of-home settings.”

His statement came just after the Producers Guild of India made a very similar request. On December 30, the Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi, Shri Manish Sisodia, met with notable cinema owners as well as members of both the Multiplex Association of India (MAI). The delegation asked the Deputy Chief Minister to intervene within the reopening of Delhi theatres during the meeting.

Members of the Multiplex Association of India (MAI) met with Manish Sisodia, the Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi, on December 30 to ask him to reopen cinema halls in the city. Karan Johar now has made an appeal towards the Delhi government as well. His message was as follows: “We ask the Delhi government to permit the operation of theatres. In comparison to other out-of-home settings, cinemas have a superior capacity to maintain a sanitary atmosphere while preserving social distance rules. #cinemasaresafe (sic) @LtGovDelhi @ArvindKejriwal @OfficeOfDyCM”

Due to an increase in Covid-19 as well as Omicron cases, the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) enforced limitations on cinema halls in Delhi, which resulted in their closure. Schools, universities, theatres, as well as gyms, have all been ordered to close immediately. Various limits have also been imposed on the operation of stores and public transportation.
