Indian cinema has explored the dark underbelly of cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar through several iconic crime dramas.
Now, writer-director Krrupesh Vayeda is bringing a lesser-known chapter of crime and power struggles from Gujarat’s Porbandar to the big screen with ‘TAPAS’.
Starring Freddy Daruwala in the lead, the gritty crime drama delves into the region’s underworld, where gang rivalries, illegal liquor trade, land disputes and political connections create a dangerous web of power and survival. Inspired by true life incidents the film follows Officer Karansinh, a fearless cop who is transferred to Porbandar with a mission to break the backbone of an expanding criminal network. But as he enters a world controlled by criminals and influenced by politics, he finds himself fighting a battle where justice comes with its own challenges.
Talking about his vision, writer-director Krrupesh Vayeda says, “TAPAS relies more on treatment than exposition. Today’s audiences want to discover the story rather than being told everything. We have focused on keeping the narrative engaging, realistic and emotionally connected.”
Freddy Daruwala, known for his commanding screen presence, steps into the role of Karansinh with intensity and restraint. Unlike larger-than-life cop characters often seen in commercial films, Karansinh is portrayed as a real human being — someone who makes mistakes, faces failures and struggles with complex choices while battling a system bigger than himself.
The film also features a strong Gujarati ensemble including Hemant Kher, Chetan Daiya and Akash Zala, adding authenticity and depth to the narrative.
Rooted in real-life incidents and inspired by people who have witnessed the region’s darker realities, ‘TAPAS’ promises a raw and realistic portrayal of crime, politics and law enforcement. The film also captures a rarely seen side of Gujarat, showcasing Porbandar’s culture, landscapes and atmosphere as an integral part of the story.
