Qazi Touqeer: 2005 Ekta Kapoor headlines made me look arrogant
Bigg Boss 20's Qazi Touqeer revisits the 2005 Ekta Kapoor project he declined, saying media painted him as arrogant when he had simply committed to another film.

Bigg Boss 20 contestant Qazi Touqeer is revisiting a 2005 chapter that he says turned a professional decision into a reputation problem. In a conversation with actor Amrapali Dubey, the singer recalled passing on a project from Ekta Kapoor and waking up to headlines that told a very different story.
What Qazi says actually happened
Qazi was 20 and had already signed a film. He says that commitment is why he declined Ekta Kapoor’s offer, not because he thought bigger opportunities were waiting. As he remembers it, the next morning’s coverage skipped that context entirely.
He recalled the headline as saying, “Qazi ditched Ekta Kapoor. Qazi has a bigger fish to fry.” That single framing, he says, changed a scheduling conflict into a judgement about his character. He pushed back on the word “ditched”, saying, “Maine ditch thodi kiya.”
The film he had signed never even released. For Qazi, that detail makes the story more painful: the “bigger fish” never came, but the reputation stuck.
A very different media era
Qazi also remembered the meeting itself. Ekta Kapoor personally narrated the story of Rockstar to him, and he admitted that he was mesmerised by her presence. At 20, he says, he did not fully grasp how big the moment was.
But his larger point is about the machinery around him. In 2005, there was no social media for a young artist to offer a same-day clarification. He summarised what happened next: “Ho gaya badnaam. Ban gaya arrogant.” The label was simple, and it outlasted the actual job.
That matters because a professional decision — turning down one offer while already committed to another — is ordinary in the industry. The reporting made it sound like betrayal. The difference between “had a prior film” and “has a bigger fish to fry” is where public sympathy moves, and Qazi never got to argue his side in real time.
How he measures the career now
Qazi also put his own record forward. He counted winning a show with a one crore prize in 2005 and the 2015 song “Afghan Jalebi” becoming a blockbuster. He described his career record as 100%.
- The offer: an Ekta Kapoor project he declined in 2005.
- The reason: he was already signed to a film.
- The headline: “Qazi ditched Ekta Kapoor.”
- The aftermath: a reputation for arrogance, he says, before he could clarify.
For the audience that met Qazi through Bigg Boss 20, the conversation adds context to a person some may have judged through an old headline. It is also a reminder that a public image can be built less on what happened than on which version travelled fastest.
Why the reflection resonates now
Qazi’s account lands at a time when audiences are more sceptical of how quickly a headline becomes fact. Without a correction loop, a 20-year-old could only watch the story settle. His version is not a denial that he declined the offer; it is a correction of the reason, and of the word “ditched”.
