Unfortunately, there is no Indian movie that has won the prestigious Oscar Awards. However, there are several instances of Oscar nominations for Indian movies and many Indians have won the prestigious Oscar Awards for their contribution to the film. 1. Bombay Jayashri Ramnath
For ‘Pi’s Lullaby’ from Ang Lee’s film ‘Life of Pi,’ musician and vocalist Jayashri Ramnath won the prize for Best Original Song.
Talking about the film ‘Life of Pi’, Santosh and Gita Patel board a ship with their sons and a few surviving animals after opting to sell their zoo in India and relocate to Canada. A violent storm wrecks the ship, leaving Pi (Suraj Sharma), the Patels’ adolescent son, as the lone human survivor. Pi isn’t alone, though; a ferocious Bengal tiger has taken up residence in the lifeboat as well. Pi and the tiger must learn to trust each other as days change into weeks and weeks develop into months if they are to live.
2. Gulzar
Gulzar, a well-known Indian lyricist, received the Academy Award for Best Original Song for his song “Jai Ho” at the 81st Academy Awards. Rahman and Guzar collaborated on the song “Slumdog Millionaire” from the film.
Talking about the film ‘Slumdog Millionaire’, Flashbacks reveal how 18-year-old Jamal Malik (Dev Patel) came to where he is on the Indian version of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.” Jamal and his brother, Salim, survive on the streets of Mumbai as members of a gang of teenage thieves when their mother dies. Jamal scrapes by with tiny jobs until he lands a position on the game show, while Salim finds the life of crime appealing.
3. Resul Pookutty
Resul Pookutty, a sound mixer, received the Oscar for Best Sound Mixing for the film “Slumdog Millionaire,” alongside Richard Pryke and Ian Tapp.
4. AR Rahman
Does this music maestro need an introduction? I don’t think so, but still for the once not knowing him. At the 81st Academy Awards, the highly renowned musician won Best Original Score and Best Original Song for his work on the film “Slumdog Millionaire.”
5. Bhanu Athaiya
In 1982, Bhanu Athaiya made history as the first Indian to receive an Academy Award or Oscar for costume design in the film “Gandhi.”
Talking about the film ‘Gandhi’, It is a well-received biographical film that depicts significant moments in the life of Mohandas Gandhi (Ben Kingsley), the beloved Indian leader who opposed British authority. Gandhi, who is dedicated to the notion of nonviolent resistance, is initially rejected by English authorities, notably the powerful Lord Irwin (John Gielgud), but he and his cause gain international acclaim, and his peaceful protests help India achieve independence.
These aren’t Indian movies but, have made us Indians proud as they are based on our country’s plots and stories. They are Indian movie in so many ways as they have contributions from Indians.
