What’s coming to Amazon Prime in January 2022?

Amazon Prime

It doesn’t receive much attention, but once you’ve visited all of the Amazon Prime end-of-year must-sees, consider paying a visit to The Tender Bar (premieres January 7th). It’s a charming little drama about a youngster who is effectively raised by his bartender uncle and the patrons at the bar, and it’s based on J.R. Moehringer’s bestseller novel, adapted by William Monahan, directed by George Clooney, and starring Ben Affleck.

It won’t take your breath away, but it’s a great storey about human connection in unexpected places. Tye Sheridan, Lily Rabe, Max Martini, Christopher Lloyd, and more join Affleck in this excellent film.

Tony Scott’s filmography is much too limited, and while not every title is a hit, you can bet that every title will keep you entertained and engaged. Deja Vu (2006) is a large, messed-up action/sci-fi film with a crazy narrative and a lot of explosions, and it’s fantastic. Denzel Washington plays an ATF agent investigating a terrorist strike who is given access to some high-tech, experimental surveillance equipment – get ready for a lot of gobbledygook while your eyes are filled with amazement. Massive set-pieces, massive explosions, and a hyper-focused Washington assure a good time, and a supporting cast that features Val Kilmer and Paula Patton doesn’t hurt either.

Look, The Taking Of Pelham 1 2 3 (2009) isn’t quite as good as John Godey’s novel adaption from 1974, but there really is no doubting the fascination of witnessing Denzel Washington spar with an insane John Travolta in a Brian Helgeland-penned script. The premise remains the same, however Scott uses his love of quick cuts and other techniques to increase the action beats and visual impact. You had a fantastic time at the movies with James Gandolfini, Luis Guzman, John Turturro, and Aunjanue Ellis.

Most movie series seem similar, including both terms of substance and also in terms of in-house style — the MCU is indeed an excellent example of this — but the others do so in amazing ways.
