Hansal Mehta Reveals Mukul Dev Was the Creative Force Behind Omertà: “That Writer Credit Made Him Feel Seen, Respected, Validated”

Filmmaker Hansal Mehta has paid a heartfelt tribute to actor and writer Mukul Dev, revealing his pivotal role in the creation of one of Mehta’s most acclaimed and controversial films, Omertà. Taking to social media, Mehta shared that it was Mukul who first brought him the story of Omertà back in 2003, long before the film came to life.

“He was also a gifted writer,” Mehta wrote. “I remember the joy in his voice when the film was finally made, the pride when he saw it with festival audiences, and that infectious excitement when his name came up in the writing credits.”

Mehta fondly recalled Mukul’s reaction each time they spoke after the film’s release: “Hansie, kya film banayi yaar. International. Soch bhi nahi sakta tha ki aisi film mein I’d have a writing credit. This is so good for me.”

Reflecting on what that recognition meant to him, Mehta added, “That credit made him feel seen. Respected. Validated.”
