BTS

“Singularity” is indeed a solo melody by member V of the South Korean boy band BTS. This was released as part of both the album Love Yourself: Tear on May 7, 2018. Charlie J. Perry as well as RM collaborated on the script, with Charlie J. Perry serving as its the only producer. On August 24, 2018, the track was re-released upon that compilation album Love Yourself: Answer.

The music video for “Singularity” was published as a teaser for such album Love Yourself: Tear, which was due out at the time. In less than fifteen hours, the video had over 10 million views. Searches for such term jumped by 7,558 percent, according to Dictionary.com.

On December 29, 2018, the song was promoted during the 2018 KBS Song Festival. Singularity was performed by V during “KBS Daejun 2018.”

Inside an article for Mnews, Goldbin and Soohyoun Nam characterised the music video’s location as a contained chamber wherein member V wanders between sections of brightness and shade, followed by a gloomy room filled with flowers. They saw the “restrained” dance, which was done with white masks, as a representation of his concealing his actual nature in order to find love, and the pictures of shattered ice as just a symbol of his realisation that he’s been acting in such an untruthful manner. According to Tamar Herman of Billboard, he appeared to be carrying out the Greek storey of Narcissus, who died because of his love for his own mirror.

The choreographer for the dance was revealed to be Keone Madrid, who has previously collaborated with BTS on dances such as “Dope,” “Fire,” “Not Today,” and “Blood Sweat & Tears.” The song video was directed by Lumpens’ Choi Yongseok.

Other notable people were GDW’s Nam Hyunwoo as director of photography, Real Lighting’s Song Hyunsuk as gaffer, Park Hyejeong as editor, as well as MU:Park E’s Jinsil and Kim Bona as art directors.

On November 21, 2020, the music video exceeded 150 million views on Youtube, becoming it one of the most viewed opener upon that platform as well as BTS’ first return trailer to do so.

Rolling Stone India classified the song’s musical style as R&B with hints of neo soul and jazz. “A calming beat enhanced by V’s honey-like voice,” according to the Burlington County Times, that “gets better with every listen.” It’s indeed 104 beats per minute and even in the key of D minor.

Charlie J. Perry, the song’s lyricist, said in an interview with Billboard that perhaps the song began as just a poetry and grew from there.
