BTS

“Dynamite” is indeed a track by the South Korean boy band BTS, which was released on August 21, 2020 by Big Hit Entertainment as well as Sony Music Entertainment. It’s the group’s first entirely recorded English song. The track has snapping handclaps, echoing synthesisers, and joyful horns, and also was written by David Stewart and Jessica Agombar and produced by Stewart. This is an exuberant disco-pop song with elements of funk, soul, and bubblegum pop, and takes influence from 1970s music.

The song, written to comfort listeners during the COVID-19 epidemic, is about joy and gratitude for the small things that make life worthwhile. “Dynamite” got favourable reviews from music reviewers at its debut, with acclaim for its catchiness and universally appealing throwback vibe. The band received their first Grammy nomination for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards, making them the first Korean pop artist to do so.

The band’s first number-one hit inside the United States, “Dynamite,” was a commercial triumph, landing at number one upon that Billboard Hot 100 list and making BTS the first all-South Korean group to top the chart. In the first week, the song sold 265,000 downloads, making this the most successful single week since Taylor Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do” (2017). “Dynamite” topped the Hot 100 for three weeks in a row. “Dynamite” premiered on Spotify with 7.778 million streams, making it the largest first-day debut for just a track in 2020.

In addition, “Dynamite” reached the top of the Billboard Global 200 as well as Billboard Global Excl. U.S. charts, topping the latter for three weeks in a row. The song reached the top 10 in 25 countries, including Hungary, Israel, Lithuania, Malaysia, Scotland, Singapore, as well as South Korea, where it topped the charts.

On April 12, 2021, the accompanying music video surpassed one billion views.

“Dynamite” was first released as just a standalone single before being featured on BTS’ fifth Korean-language album, Be (2020), which was released on November 20.

The members did not participate towards the songwriting or production of “Dynamite,” which is among the few tracks on the album. Writers David Stewart and Jessica Agombar recounted the song’s origins in interviews with such a variety of media sites. They learnt that BTS was looking for an English language single from their publisher Tim Blacksmith at Stellar Songs. “At the start of lockdown,” the pair composed three songs through Zoom calls. Stewart and Agombar aimed to make a song that is “energetic, exciting, optimistic, uplifting, and just like a gigantic ball of energy,” according to Stewart.

In early April, Stellar Songs delivered the song to Columbia CEO Ron Perry and Big Hit Records. BTS first picked a different song before settling on “Dynamite” two weeks later. Jenna Andrews helped rewrite the song’s lyrics to make them more PG-rated.
