The song “Permission to Dance” was written by BTS, a South Korean boy band. It was released as just a stand-alone single on July 9, 2021, by Big Hit Music as well as Sony Music. This song too was featured upon that CD edition of the band’s previous hit “Butter,” and it is their third English-language single. The song achieved number one in five countries and was in the top 10 in ten more.

Ed Sheeran, Johnny McDaid, Steve Mac, as well as Jenna Andrews wrote “Permission to Dance,” which was produced by Mac and Andrews alongside Stephen Kirk. Sheeran previously collaborated on BTS’s “Make It Right” off the album Map of the Soul: Persona (2019). The song “will make your heart beat to the rhythm of BTS’s optimistic spirit,” according to Big Hit. The song has been described as a dance-pop tune with a lot of energy.

BTS released their second English-language song, “Butter,” on May 21, 2021, to critical and financial acclaim. This song was first published as a digital download, a cassette, as well as a 7-inch vinyl single. BTS announced a CD release of “Butter” on June 15 along with the release of a new track. Ed Sheeran confirmed that he composed a song for BTS inside an interview with Many of these Requested Live on June 27, saying, “I’ve actually worked with BTS on their last record, and I’ve just written a song for their next record.” The tracklist for the CD was unveiled on July 1, and the song’s title was announced as “Permission to Dance.” On July 9, 2021, the song and its instrumental were released.

In the United States, “Permission to Dance” debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 on July 24, 2021, with 15.9 million streaming, 1.1 million radio airplay impressions, and 140,000 copies sold in the first week. “Permission to Dance” dethroned “Butter” as the number one song, the first time one artist has done so since Drake’s “In My Feelings” dethroned his own “Nice for What” in 2018.

The song also became BTS’ fifth number-one success on the list in ten months and two weeks, making them the first artists since Michael Jackson in 1988 to have five number-one songs. The song was also their fourth to debut at number one on the Hot 100, cementing their status as the group with the most number-one single debuts (tied with Justin Bieber and Drake, and behind Ariana Grande, who has five).

“Permission to Dance” earned BTS’ eighth number one upon that Digital Songs list, extending the group’s record as the group with the most number one singles on the chart. The track debuted there at top of Billboard’s Hot Trending Songs list, which would be based on how often songs are talked on Twitter.

The band members may be seen dancing in a sunny location, a laundry, and a patio in the song video, which is set in a post-COVID-19 pandemic world. During the first day of its release, the video had 72.3 million views, making it the sixth most viewed YouTube video in the first 24 hours.
