Blackpink has risen and become one of the most popular girl groups in the world within only 4 years, featuring members Jennie, Jisoo, Rosé, and Lisa striving to break records and break new ground. They were the very first K-pop girl group to perform at Coachella as well as gain 1 billion YouTube views (making them the most subscribed music group on the platform), and also the first female group from any nation to make Forbes Asia’s 30 Under 30 list.

Well with the tune Kill This Love, the band broke 3 Guinness World Records in 2019, with over 312 million Spotify plays including over 824 million YouTube views—just a fraction of both the quartet’s billions of streams, downloads, views, and followers.

They also embarked on its most financially successful concert tour by such a Korean female quartet the year before. They’re regulars at the front of the rows of fashion shows as well as the faces of major companies like Chanel, Puma, Louis Vuitton, and Dior. And they did everything with only a few songs in their repertoire.

As YG Entertainment’s first girl group in seven years, anticipation for Blackpink’s August 2016 debut had reached a fever pitch. The renowned, pioneering four-member girl group 2NE1 had disbanded, and Blackpink was supposed to resurrect the daring EDM style of music they’d epitomised.

Its debut, Square One, had been an instant hit, with Whistle’s persistent build and Boombayah’s arrogant chorus providing a brief nevertheless exhilarating introduction.

Square Two, the second single album, was released in November 2016 as well as contained a pop hit K-pop (Playing With Fire) as well as an acoustic version of Whistle as well as Stay, a country-influenced piece that enabled the duo to stretch their vocal wings outside form their ‘female infatuation’ theme.

Though they were branded “the new 2NE1” when they initially debuted, viewing some of their previous appearances on Korean variety programmes highlights not just Blackpink’s chaotically amusing presence, but then also their ambition to carve out on their own personalities.

Jisoo, a vocalist, became a face for beauty products Kiss Me as well as Dior; Jennie, a rapper and vocalist, has branched out as a solo artist and a powerful influencer; Rosé, a New Zealand-born vocalist, has been featured on G-hits, Dragon’s and Lisa, a rapper and dancer from Thailand, is perhaps the most K-pop celebrity on Instagram.

They recognised the importance of each other back then, as well as they recognise it now to finish the group alchemy which has endeared themselves to millions. “I don’t believe that one person should perform more dancing or singing than another.” Jennie previously told Vogue Korea, “I believe Blackpink’s harmony is full cos of each person’s spirit.”
