Almost everyone has a cheating tale to share, whether they’ve done it, witnessed it, or simply country heard about it. I’m going to tell you about a run-in I had with a cheating spouse, but I’m hoping you’ll reciprocate.
When I was considerably younger, a lovely young lady (who was much younger than I was) developed an unexpected attraction to my constant partner. I accidentally intercepted a gift for him—a lovely t-shirt—along with the accompanying love note. I seemed to have no notion there was indeed a third wheel in our relationship until that point.
Instead of sobbing and making a mess of myself, I put on the offending clothing and marched straight over to the neighbourhood medicine shop. I sat in her register line, hoping she’d be the first one to call up my purchases.
Miss Thang’s eyes widened as she noticed my t-shirt. I began my career in: “I received your present. It’s perfect. But if you’re cheating with him, you can take him because I’m not interested in cheaters.”
Then I flicked my hair, as only a young woman of a certain age can, and proceeded to deal with that nefarious lover.
Barbara Mandrell’s single about a lady having an affair with a married guy reached number one on the country music charts in 1979. (It was also recorded in 2006 by country singer Lee Ann Rimes.)
Against knowing their connection is ethically wrong, she opts for sloppy seconds with him, despite the warning of friends and family:
If loving him is wrong, the mistress decides she doesn’t like being right. Somebody, please contact this man’s wife.
This young couple had no intention of breaking their promises to one another as they stood at the altar. Nevertheless, as the years went, the husband was taken away by business, infidelity, or whatever else (we don’t know), and the couple’s three-bedroom home became the bride’s jail.
