Punjab Police had taken away security of Sidhu Moose Wala, a day before he was shot.
Sidhu Moose Wala, a well-known Punjabi artist and rapper, was shot and killed in Mansa, a few kilometres from his home village of Moosa. Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu was his real name, but he preferred to be called Moose Wala since he loved his community. ‘’I am not going anywhere. I will live here and I will die here, and that is why I chose to be known not by my name but by the name of my village.”
This is what he will say to voters during the Punjab Assembly elections in February of this year. He was elected to the Congress Party from Mansa, where he ran against AAP’s Vijay Singla and was defeated by him by 53,323 votes.
During the elections, he conducted a totally different campaign. He desired pure air, pure water, pure food, and pure politics. He had spoken during a meeting in Khiwa Khurd village on why he entered politics: “When I was 23, I chose a profession (music) to transform the life of my parents. At 27, I have fame and money to give to my parents, but I can’t buy the air… Rich or poor we breathe the same air.”
In his hamlet, he also used to host an annual free cancer camp. “We are a small village of 2,800 people but every year, at least six to eight people get diagnosed with cancer. It’s all because of the toxins in our soil and air,” This comes a day after the Punjab Police withdrew Moose Wala’s security, as well as the security of 423 others, as part of the Bhagwant Mann government’s effort to combat VIP culture. According to Gaurav Toora, SSP, Mansa, the preliminary inquiry revealed that it was an inter-gang feud.
“Sidhu Moosewala didn’t take his bulletproof car and gunman today. FIR is being registered. We will take immediate action against the gangster and persons involved,” he said.
According to News18, Canada-based mobster Goldy Brar, a close ally of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, has claimed responsibility for the murder of Sidhu Moosewala. According to sources, an AK-47 was most likely utilised in the incident.
