Do more women listen to hip hop music than men?

Hip-hop, as well as rap, are as much a part of women’s culture as they are of men’s. Women have proven time and time again that hip-hop isn’t simply a man’s game, whether it’s through their rapping prowess, creative capabilities, or ground-breaking decision-making skills behind the scenes.

Tierra Whack and Rapsody, for example, have fought their way up to the top of the hip-hop category in recent years, owing to amazing projects and abilities to boot. Despite these significant advancements, women are constantly left out from the discussion when it comes to deciding the best inside the genre.

The Brew Podcast’s list of the 50 greatest rappers of all times sparked outrage on social media earlier in the summer because no women were featured. Nicki Minaj’s now-deleted retirement statement in September was welcomed with a mix of emotions, from grief to confusion to apathy. Many others questioned whether Minaj is included in a Top 10 list of all-time rappers, sparking disputes regarding her record and if she is ‘deserving’ of such a distinction. Now, two female rappers are now in the top 25 in BBC Music’s vote of the best hip-hop tracks of all time, however, none are all in the top fifteen.

Taylor Crumpton, a cultural commentator, tells BBC Music that “female rappers have always been part of the genre’s genealogy.” “However, because of power dynamics, those in control chose to use their gender as a weapon in order to deny them whatever titles they deserve.”

Men have historically listened to rap music more so than women, which may have influenced their perceptions of the genre. The most ardent rap fans, according to Nielsen’s 2015 Audience Insights, comprised young African-American as well as Latino (Hispanic) men between the ages of 18 and 24.

Men have much more frequently than not headed labels and enterprises inside the genre upon that corporate side. As per music writer Keith Murphy, hip-top hop’s brass has a shot at getting notoriety as well as funding, excluding many female MCs in order to encourage their “more relatable” male peers.
