Kisan Kanya is a Hindi Cinecolor feature film directed by Moti Gidwani and produced by Imperial Pictures’ Ardeshir Irani in 1937. The fact that it was India’s first indigenously produced colour film makes it a popular memory among Indians.
V. Shantaram had previously created the colourized Marathi film Sairandhri (1933). The film, however, was processed and produced in Germany. As a result, Kisan Kanya was India’s first colour film. Kisan Kanya was a film based on a book by Saadat Hasan Manto about impoverished farmers.
Ardeshir Irani, who had previously produced noteworthy films such as Nala Damayanti (1920), India’s first foreign co-production (with Italy), and India’s first talkie Alam Ara (1931), developed the concept for a colour picture. The colour film Kisan Kanya was created utilising the Cinecolor technique, which Irani had purchased from an American firm.
The picture had a mediocre box office performance. Kisan Kanya was based on Saadat Hasan Manto’s novel and focused on the hardship of impoverished farmers.
The cast of the first colour movie includes Padma Devi as Bansri, Jilloo as Ramdai, Ghulam Mohammed as Randheer, Nissar as Ramu, Syed Ahmed as Muneem and Gani Gani as the Zamindar (landlord) in prominent roles.
Kisan Kanya is regarded as India’s first colour picture, however, it did not usher in the era of colour in Indian cinema. Cinecolor was used to shoot Kisan Kanya. In the mid-1950s, Indian cinema began to embrace colour.
