2. Eurovision Song Contest: The Story Of Fire Saga
Because everyone has had a strange year, why don’t nominate a strangely pleasant film like Eurovision Song Contest? Eurovision, starring Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams as two wacky Icelandic singers trying to get famous in the annual Eurovision contest, is a bit of a slapstick comedy with a warm, emotional resonance. While it’s a shame that “Jaja Ding Dong” won’t be performing at the Oscars, “Husavik” is still a wonderful asset to the Best Original Music competition.
3. Hillbilly Elegy
From of the leading talents to the dubious political concept underlying J.D. Vance’s book for his little Appalachian hometown, Hillbilly Elegy is a divisive Oscar contender. Despite the fact that the Oscars appear to have seen through it, the picture received nods for Cosmetics and Hairdressing as well as Best Best Supporting for Glenn Close, who deserved an Oscar perhaps not for that. 4. The Life Ahead
The Life Ahead, directed by Edoardo Ponti and starring Sofia Loren, earned positive reviews but only garnered one award for its original track “Io S (Seen).” (Netflix has it available to watch.)
5. Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom
Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, based first on August Wilson drama, wowed audiences with outstanding performances, particularly from Viola Davis, who was nominated, and the late Chadwick Boseman, who received a posthumous Best Actor nomination and is expected to win. The film was not nominated for any of the major awards, such as Best Picture or Director, although it did receive nominations for Costume and Production Design. (Netflix has it available to watch.)
