Del Toro pulled outside to focus on “The Hobbit,” and by 2008, it was claimed that a new version of “Tarzan” had been in the works, co-written by Stephen Sommers and Stuart Beatle and said to be based on the Pirates of the Caribbean series. Craig Brewer, who also reworked a draft of the film, was supposed to helm the picture in 2011, however, that plan fell through. Instead, in 2012, David Yates was chosen to direct. Susanna White and Gary Ross were among the other directors in the running. The project was believed to have briefly halted in April 2013 owing to funding difficulties.
