Suriya49: Suriya eyes Mandaadi director for coastal action drama
Suriya is reportedly in talks with Mandaadi director Mathimaran for his 49th film, a possible coastal action drama produced by Kalaippuli S Thanu.

Suriya’s 49th film could take him to the coast. The actor is reportedly in early talks with Mathimaran, director of Mandaadi, for a project tentatively called Suriya49. Pinkvilla describes it as a “coastal action drama”, but there has been no official announcement yet.
The report, credited to Movies Singapore, adds that producer Kalaippuli S. Thanu is likely to back the film. That detail matters because Suriya and Thanu were previously expected to collaborate on Vaadivaasal, the long-delayed Vetrimaaran project. Thanu recently indicated that Vaadivaasal remains on the cards, so fans are now watching two possible Suriya-Thanu films at once.
Suriya was last seen in the romantic drama Vishwanath & Sons, directed by Venky Atluri. That film, co-starring Mamitha Baiju, followed an industrialist who becomes a father through surrogacy and develops a bond with a young medical student.
Why the Thanu connection matters
If Suriya49 moves forward, it would bring Suriya back with a producer whose most famous pending title is also a Suriya project. That creates a natural question: is Suriya49 a fresh direction while Vaadivaasal waits, or a sign that the older film has been pushed further down the line?
Right now, the answer is open. Suriya has not confirmed the collaboration, and the project is still being framed as a discussion rather than a signed film.
Suriya’s packed calendar
The actor’s immediate priority is Scene, which releases in theatres on November 6, 2026, for Diwali. Directed by Jithu Madhavan, the action comedy pairs Suriya with Nazriya Nazim Fahadh and Naslen, with production by Zhagaram Studios.
After that comes Suriya48, also known as SuriyaXHombale, directed by TJ Gnanavel and produced by Hombale Films. Here is the slate as it stands:
- Scene — theatrical release on November 6, 2026
- Suriya48 / SuriyaXHombale — with TJ Gnanavel and Hombale Films
- Suriya49 — reported coastal action drama with Mathimaran, unconfirmed
- Vaadivaasal — still on the cards with Vetrimaaran, but delayed
What fans should watch for
Until Suriya or a production house makes an announcement, Suriya49 is best treated as a strong possibility rather than a done deal. The clearest signals would be an official producer credit, a casting update, or a formal title reveal. For now, the story is less about a new film and more about how Suriya’s next two years are being shaped.
