Ramayana opens at Rs 50 crore, breaks pre-Diwali record
Early estimates put the Ranbir Kapoor and Yash epic at Rs 50-51 crore on day one, the biggest pre-Diwali opening ever, beating Tiger 3.

The Ranbir Kapoor and Yash-led Ramayana has turned the usually soft pre-Diwali window into a record-breaking headline. Early trade estimates put the Hindi opening day at Rs. 50 crore to Rs. 51 crore, depending on how well single screens in the mass belt performed.
That is the biggest pre-Diwali start on record, moving past the long-standing number set by Tiger 3, which opened at Rs. 44 crore on Diwali day itself.
Why the timing makes the number bigger
The days just before Diwali are traditionally a lull. Audiences are occupied with the festival run-up, and studios usually hold their biggest titles for the holiday itself. Ramayana’s start matters because the film is pulling that festive-level audience forward, driven almost entirely by the stardom of its two leads.
National chains are expected to account for around Rs. 30 crore on Thursday, roughly 55 percent of the total business. The film has been placed on more than 20,000 shows in North India, giving it the capacity to keep accumulating through the weekend.
The opening-day numbers at a glance
- Rs. 50-51 crore: estimated day-one Hindi collection
- Rs. 30 crore: expected contribution from national chains
- 20,000+: shows in North India
- Rs. 5 crore: estimated cost of the limited South release
Trade projections suggest a dip on Friday, which is normal after a mass opening. The more important number is Saturday: with strong reports, the film could cross its opening day and touch Rs. 60 crore. If that happens, the four-day pre-Diwali weekend is projected to land around Rs. 210 crore, and the Monday-to-Wednesday stretch is expected to double that total as capacity peaks.
The South release keeps some money off the table
There is one caveat in the numbers. Ramayana has had a restrained release in Southern markets because of distribution-partner choices, and that limited screen count has cost it at least Rs. 5 crore in Hindi, according to trade estimates. In other words, this record is being set with room still available.
For fans in limited-release markets, the practical takeaway is to check local listings early before the Saturday rush.
