Ramayana’s Rs 108 cr opening still leans on Hindi belts

The mythological epic collected Rs 108.31 crore in two days, but Hindi contributed nearly three-fourths as South versions fell faster.

Ramayana's Rs 108 cr opening: Hindi is doing the heavy lifting

Ramayana – Part I has put Rs. 108.31 crores nett on the board across India in its first two days, but a closer look at the language splits shows a film still leaning heavily on its Hindi audience.

The mythological epic, starring Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama and Yash as Ravana, opened at Rs. 62.47 crores on Thursday and added Rs. 45.84 crores on Friday, a day-two fall of 26.62%.

Hindi is doing the heavy lifting

The Hindi version contributed Rs. 45.46 crores on day one and Rs. 34.29 crores on day two. Its share of the nationwide total actually rose from 72.77% on Thursday to about 74.80% on Friday, even as collections slipped 24.57%.

In two days, Hindi has accumulated Rs. 79.75 crores, nearly three-fourths of the total domestic number. For a story with all-India recognition, that concentration is the central trend of the opening.

How the South languages moved

Kannada delivered the biggest South opening at Rs. 7 crores on Yash’s star power, ahead of Telugu’s Rs. 6.22 crores. But it fell 34.57% on day two to Rs. 4.58 crores. Telugu held a little better, dropping 27.65% to Rs. 4.50 crores.

Tamil remains the weakest spot. It opened at Rs. 2.44 crores and declined 42.21% to Rs. 1.41 crores on day two, generating only Rs. 3.85 crores over two days. Malayalam had the smallest percentage drop, 21.48%, but its absolute contribution stayed modest.

  • Hindi: Rs. 79.75 crores over two days; 24.57% day-two fall.
  • Kannada: Rs. 7 crores to Rs. 4.58 crores; 34.57% fall.
  • Telugu: Rs. 6.22 crores to Rs. 4.50 crores; 27.65% fall.
  • Tamil: Rs. 2.44 crores to Rs. 1.41 crores; 42.21% fall.
  • Malayalam: Rs. 1.35 crores to Rs. 1.06 crores; 21.48% fall.

Together, the four South Indian versions moved from Rs. 17.01 crores on day one to Rs. 11.55 crores on day two. Their combined share slipped from 27.23% to 25.20%, and the 32.10% fall was sharper than Hindi’s decline.

The weekend is the real test

For Bollywood fans, the opening matters because Ramayana was positioned as the template for big-budget multilingual mythology. The first 48 hours suggest that scale and casting can guarantee a strong start, but they do not automatically ensure retention outside the Hindi belt.

The next two days will be telling. A Saturday-Sunday jump would suggest that family audiences and weekend moviegoers are arriving. If not, the Monday hold will reveal whether the opening was driven mainly by pre-release excitement.

In absolute terms, the opening is huge. Against the pan-India positioning and the day-to-day trajectory, it is mixed, and the numbers make the Hindi dependence hard to ignore.
