Rajinikanth Rejected Baasha 2 & Petta 2, Chose Jailer 2

Rajinikanth explains why he passed on Baasha 2 and Petta 2, and the one Jailer plot thread that finally made a sequel feel earned.

Why Rajinikanth Said No to Baasha 2 and Petta 2, Then Yes to Jailer 2

Rajinikanth has long been wary of sequels, preferring to leave a beloved film alone rather than stretch it into a second part. But at the Jailer 2 Super Show, the superstar admitted he has now made one deliberate exception. The reason, he says, is not franchise pressure — it is the way Jailer ended.

Why Baasha 2 and Petta 2 did not happen

Speaking ahead of the release of Jailer 2, Rajinikanth explained his usual hesitation: he feels filmmakers often take what worked in a first film and simply “add salt and spice” to manufacture a follow-up. He was approached for Baasha 2, and Karthik Subbaraj came to him with a Petta 2 built around an extension of Vijay Sethupathi’s character. Both times, he said no.

  • Baasha 2: Rajinikanth was approached, but he declined.
  • Petta 2: Karthik Subbaraj pitched an extension of Vijay Sethupathi’s character; Rajinikanth passed.
  • Jailer 2: The only project where a sequel felt justified to him.

The one ending that changed his mind

Rajinikanth said he rewatched Jailer after it arrived on OTT. In the final stretch, as his character prepares to finish off Varma, Varma warns that a larger network is still operating and that they will not spare him. That single open thread, the actor said, made the story feel ready for a sequel rather than forced.

The decision also required a scheduling shift. Director Nelson Dilipkumar was initially committed to a Telugu film, but postponed that project to direct Jailer 2.

What Jailer 2 is about

The new film brings back “Tiger” Muthuvel Pandian, a retired warden whose quiet life is upended when an empire threatens his family and legacy. To trace the operation, he poses as a driver and works his way up the chain of command, forced to revive old skills and lean on former allies.

That premise has already sparked talk of a third film. Some reports suggest Jailer 2 could end with a post-credit scene setting up another instalment, and tracker AB George has floated the possibility of Jailer 3. For now, there is no official confirmation from the makers.

Why fans should read this as a good sign

For audiences tired of legacy sequels that feel like brand extensions, Rajinikanth’s logic is refreshing. It suggests Jailer 2 exists because the first film left a real story door open, not because a studio demanded another hit. That is the kind of sequel thinking that tends to age better with viewers.

It also settles the long-running Baasha and Petta speculation in the actor’s own words, while leaving the door open for Jailer’s world to continue if the story earns it.
