Raja Hindustani

Dharmesh Darshan directed Raja Hindustani, a 1996 Hindi-language romantic subplot movie. It depicts the tale of a taxi driver representing a tiny village that fell in love with an affluent beautiful woman. The lead actors are Aamir Khan and Karisma Kapoor. The plot of this film, which was released on November 15, 1996, was based on the 1965 film Jab Jab Phool Khile, which starred Shashi Kapoor and Nanda. Nadeem-Shravan composed the film’s music, and Sameer wrote the lyrics. It went on to win five Filmfare Awards, including the awards for Best Film and Best Actors, and seven Screen Awards.

Raja Hindustani was indeed the third-highest grossing Indian film of said 1990s in aspects of box office receipts. The movie, which had a production of 57.5 million dollars, went on to make 763.4 million dollars globally, making it the highest-grossing picture of the year and the 4th movie in India within the 1990s, following Hum Aapke Hain Koun…!, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. The movie’s music was well-known and popular, particularly in India’s eastern and central states. Karisma Kapoor received praise for her appearance and acting skills as Aarti, a wealthy, beautiful, sensitive young woman with many hopes and wishes.

It marked a watershed moment in her professional life. Her performance earned her a Filmfare Best Actress Award. The rapport between both the main pair of Aamir Khan and Karishma Kapoor was lauded and that there was a highly talked over the romantic scene. The movie was recreated in Kannada as Naanu Naane in 2002, with Upendra and Sakshi Shivanand within starring roles, and also in Odia as Priya Mo Priya in 2005, with Prema Bandham in Telugu.

“The picture is sadly antiquated,” said movie critic Anupama Chopra in her review of Raja Hindustani for India Today, “but Darshan wins with his music-catchy Pardesi, pardesi — and with his starring woman, Karisma.” She continued by complimenting Kapoor’s work, adding, “Karisma looks gorgeous and performs admirably. She is the heart and soul of an otherwise uninteresting picture.”
