Master

Lokesh Kanagaraj wrote and directed Master, a Tamil-language action thriller film released in 2021. Vijay and Vijay Sethupathi feature inside the movie, which is produced by Xavier Britto through his new production company XB Movie Creators. Malavika Mohanan, Shanthanu Bhagyaraj, Andrea Jeremiah, Arjun Das, and Gouri G. Kishan play supporting parts. The storey follows J. D. (Vijay), an alcoholic professor who, unknowing to him, takes a three-month teaching position at a juvenile home. He eventually comes into conflict with Bhavani (Vijay Sethupathi), a violent thug who exploits the children as a scapegoat for his illegal operations.

In May 2019, Lokesh Kanagaraj presented the script to Vijay, and following his approval, the movie was released in August 2019. The script, screenplay, and dialogues were written by Kanagaraj, alongside Rathna Kumar and Pon Parthiban as co-writers. The primary filming for the movie began in October 2019 and finished in February 2020; the entire movie was filmed in 129 days throughout Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Karnataka. The official title Master was revealed on December 31, 2019, after the game was first released under the preliminary title Thalapathy 64. Anirudh Ravichander wrote the soundtrack, whereas Sathyan Sooryan and Philomin Raj handled cinematography and editing, correspondingly.

The theatrical premiere of Master was originally scheduled for April 9, 2020, but was postponed owing to the COVID-19 epidemic in India. Rather than releasing it on any over-the-top media source, the filmmakers chose to wait for a theatrical release. The film was ultimately released in theatres on January 13, 2021, a day before Pongal, after being postponed for several months. The film was also dubbed and released in Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada under the same title, with the Hindi, dubbed version named Vijay The Master being released on January 14, 2021.

Master was also the fastest Tamil movie to be broadcast on a digital platform, with the creators teaming up with Amazon Prime Video and premiering on January 29, 2021, just 16 days after its theatrical debut.

Critics praised Vijay’s distinctive portrayal, Sethupathi’s performance, Lokesh’s directing and script, and Anirudh’s movie score and soundtrack, but criticised the narrative and length of the movie. There at the time of its release, this was the first Motion picture to hold the top spot at the global box office.

Despite the movie’s fractured theatrical distribution and early digital premiere, it grossed between 250 and 300 crores, making it one of the highest-grossing Tamil films and the highest-grossing post-pandemic movie. Many trade experts and exhibitors applauded the movie’s crew for reviving the theatre sector, which had suffered significant losses as a result of the epidemic.

Anirudh Ravichander created the soundtrack album and background music for the movie, with lyrics by Arunraja Kamaraj, Gana Balachandar, Arivu, Vignesh Shivan, Vishnu Edavan, and Bjorn Surrao.
