Life of Pi

The movie Life of Pi was released in 2012 and is centred on Yann Martel’s 2001 novel of the same title. Suraj Sharma, Irrfan Khan, Rafe Spall, Tabu, Adil Hussain, and Gérard Depardieu feature in the movie directed by Ang Lee and written by David Magee. The plot focuses on an Indian adolescent named “Pi” Patel who tells a novelist about his life and how, there at age of 16, he survives a shipwreck and ends up adrift in the Pacific Ocean on a lifeboat with a Bengal tiger. M. Night Shyamalan, Alfonso Cuarón, and Jean-Pierre Jeunet were all engaged at various phases of the film’s production until Lee was hired.

In 2011, filming took place in India, Taiwan, and Montreal, including visual effects handled by Rhythm & Hues Studios (R&H). On September 28, 2012, the movie made its global debut as the opening movie of the 50th New York Film Festival, which took place at both Walter Reade Theater and Alice Tully Hall in New York City.

Life of Pi was a critical and financial success, grossing more than US$609 million worldwide and getting positive reviews. It received three Golden Globe nominations, notably Best Picture – Drama as well as Best Director, as well as a Golden Globe for Best Original Score.

Mychael Danna, who earlier wrote the music for Lee’s films The Ice Storm and Ride well with Devil, provided the movie’s musical score. Sony Classical Records published a soundtrack of the song on November 16, 2012. Danna and Bombay Jayashri co-wrote the track “Pi’s Lullaby,” which is performed in Tamil on the CD.

On the review aggregate website Rotten Tomatoes, Life of Pi has an 86 per cent approval rating based on 253 reviews with an average rating of 7.90/10. “A 3D version of a purportedly “unfilmable” novel, Ang Lee’s Life of Pi accomplishes the near-impossible – it’s an astounding technical feat that’s also emotionally satisfying,” says the website’s critical consensus. The movie has a 79 out of 100 Metacritic score, depending on 44 reviews, suggesting “generally good reviews.”
