Anurag Singh wrote and directed Kesari, a 2019 Bollywood war movie in India. Underneath the umbrellas of Dharma Productions, Cape of Good Films, Azure Entertainment, and Zee Studios, Karan Johar, Aruna Bhatia, Hiroo Yash Johar, Apoorva Mehta, and Sunir Khetarpal produced it together. Parineeti Chopra, Vikram Singh Chauhan, Sarwar, Vansh Bhardwaj, Jaspreet Singh, Vivek Saini, Vikram Kochhar, and Rakesh Sharma appear alongside Akshay Kumar inside the movie. It depicts the circumstances leading up to the Battle of Saragarhi in 1897, which pitted 21 troops from the British Indian Army’s 36th Sikhs against 10,000 Afridi and Orakzai Pashtun tribesmen.

Kesari was announced in October 2017, featuring Kumar and Johar reprising their duties; Khan later departed the project. It was originally intended as a production partnership among Salman Khan and Johar, with Kumar acting in the lead role. Kumar’s character’s wife is played by Parineeti Chopra. The movie’s principal filming began in January 2018 and ended in December. Tanishk Bagchi, Arko Pravo Mukherjee, Chirantan Bhatt, Jasbir Jassi, Gurmoh, and Jasleen Royal composed the music, while Kumaar, Manoj Muntashir, Kunwar Juneja, and Bagchi wrote the lyrics.

The movie was produced on an 80-crore budget and released globally by Zee Studios.

On March 21, 2019, the movie was released in India during the Holi holiday. It got great reviews from critics, who praised the ensemble cast’s performances, as well as the visuals, production values, art direction, action sequences, and homage. It had a strong start at the box office, but the opening day morning collection was hampered by Holi celebrations. Through its initial weekend, the movie has made over a hundred crore rupees globally.

It became one of the highest-earning Bollywood movies of 2019, grossing over 207.09 crores globally.

In 2017, Salman Khan, as well as Karan Johar, revealed that they might collaborate on a movie based on the Battle of Saragarhi, which would feature Akshay Kumar. According to media sources, Khan dropped out from the project in favour of a similar-themed picture featuring Ajay Devgn, and then in October of that year, Johar and Kumar released a statement regarding their cooperation just on the movie, revealing that Khan had dropped out so that the movie would be titled Kesari. Parineeti Chopra has been cast in a supporting role as Kumar’s character’s wife, whom he left behind in the hamlet after entering the army.

The principal filming for the film started on January 5, 2018, and ended on December 31, 2018. The movie was made on an 80-crore budget (equivalent to 84 crores or US$11 million in 2020).
