Kamal Haasan's Sandiyar goes on floors on his birthday

Kamal Haasan has turned his birthday into a production update. The star’s new film with director SU Arun Kumar, now titled Sandiyar, officially went on floors on Saturday as the makers released a fierce first-look poster.

A first look with no mercy

The poster presents Kamal Haasan in an intense avatar, pistol in hand and a grim expression. The title was announced on Friday, and the team followed it up with a birthday message that doubles as a promise: “6 ROUNDS, ZERO MERCY. Revenge does give satisfaction, but… Happy Birthday to our SANDIYAR! SHOOT BEGINS TODAY.”

The title has already drawn attention for its echo of Kamal Haasan’s Virumaandi (2004), though the makers have kept the plot and characters under wraps for now.

The team behind Sandiyar

Sandiyar is Kamal Haasan’s first collaboration with SU Arun Kumar, who is directing his sixth feature. Arun Kumar’s filmography moves between gentle drama and action — Pannaiyarum Padminiyum (2014), Sethupathi (2016), Sindhubaadh (2019), Chiththa (2023) and Veera Dheera Sooran (2025).

Kamal Haasan produces under Raaj Kamal Films International, with R Mahendran as co-producer. Anirudh Ravichander is composing the music, reuniting with Kamal after Vikram (2022) and Indian 2 (2024). The technical team includes cinematographer Sunil KS, production designer CS Balachander and stunt choreographers Anbariv.

Kamal Haasan’s packed slate

Sandiyar is only one piece of a busy lineup. Here is what else is on the way:

  • A reunion with Rajinikanth, directed by Nelson, marking their first screen pairing in decades.
  • Indian 3 with Shankar, continuing the vigilante franchise.
  • Dharman, a Rajinikanth-led project directed by Ashwath Marimuthu, backed by Kamal Haasan.
  • Seyon, starring Sivakarthikeyan, from director Sivakumar Murugesan.

Anirudh is attached as composer across several of these projects, making him a recurring creative presence in Kamal Haasan’s next phase. With the cameras now rolling on Sandiyar, expect casting and story updates in the coming months.
