Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2 is turning its third week into a milestone chase. The Nelson Dilipkumar-directed action drama added Rs 6 crore on its third Friday, taking its India gross to Rs 486.50 crore in 16 days, according to trade estimates.
The film recorded a 60 per cent drop from its previous Friday, a normal cooling-off for a film entering its third week. But the bigger story is what lies ahead: a strong Saturday and Sunday could push it past Rs 500 crore by the end of the weekend.
The regional breakdown
Jailer 2 is not relying on any single market. Backed by Sun Pictures, the film has built its total across several strongholds.
- Tamil Nadu: Rs 187.50 crore so far; the film is poised to cross Rs 200 crore over its full run.
- Telugu markets: Rs 87.50 crore, though trade estimates were expecting more here.
- Karnataka: Rs 86.50 crore, a record number for the film.
- Kerala: Rs 75 crore, another record-level performance.
That kind of spread matters. A Tamil film can open well on star power, but it needs Karnataka, Kerala and the Telugu states to deliver big numbers to enter the all-India record conversation.
Why Rs 500 crore matters
Only one Tamil film has ever crossed Rs 500 crore in India: 2.0. If Jailer 2 gets there this weekend, it becomes the second, giving Rajinikanth a presence in both corners of that club.
The third Friday hold of Rs 6 crore may look modest next to the opening weekend, but it indicates the film still has audience interest going into the weekend. The real question is how much it can add before the Diwali releases Ramayana and Scene arrive to split screens.
