With $771 million in North America well after the fourth weekend, “Avengers: Endgame” is indeed the highest-grossing domestic film in much more than three years. Their final feat will be monumental — but this will come far too soon, since “John Wick 3” now occupies the top slot. The Marvel film, which was released on April 25, isn’t even a month old yet, but unlike previous all-time successes, it isn’t driving the most commerce.
Here’s where we are right now, with some estimates, records made, and comparisons to past big hits:
No one can begrudgingly accept $850 million. At the very least, “Endgame” will be the second-biggest movie in a decade in which blockbusters have dominated the box office.
It arrives at a time when comic books, particularly Marvel comics, are indeed a mature force. So, although it’s a fantastic gross, it’s much less than what was expected following a record-breaking $357 million opening weekend, which predicted a $900 million total as that of the lower end of the spectrum of the likely final take.
Box office experts estimate totals based on history, math, as well as multiples; at $850 million, the multiple would be a little under 2.4. In comparison, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” was seen 3.8 times and “Avengers: Infinity War” was seen 2.6 times. “Captain America: Civil War,” which had a score of little under 2.3, was the lowest for a Marvel picture.
An A+ Cinemascore, as well as a history of repeat viewings amongst core fans, further boosted expectations for “Endgame.” To beat “Force Awakens,” which benefited from Christmas playtime, fewer initial screens, and arguably a greater event element as a series relaunch, it needed to reach $937 million without adjusting for inflation.
