Sandeep Reddy Vanga wrote and directed the 2017 Telugu love drama Arjun Reddy, which was produced by his brother Pranay Reddy Vanga’s firm Bhadrakali Pictures. Vijay Deverakonda and Shalini Pandey lead in the film, which also features Rahul Ramakrishna, Jia Sharma, Sanjay Swaroop, Gopinath Bhat, Kamal Kamaraju, and Kanchana. Arjun Reddy Deshmukh (Deverakonda) is an elevated alcoholic surgeon with anger control issues inside the movie. Following the wedding of his lover Preethi Shetty (Pandey), Arjun embarks on a self-destructive path, with the movie focusing on his fall and ultimate comeback.
Sandeep Vanga’s experience as a physio student influenced Arjun Reddy in part. He worked on the script for 2 years, as well as the movie took 4 to 5 years to make. Principal photography began on June 20, 2016, in Hyderabad, and lasted 86 business days. Mangalore, Dehradun, and New Delhi were among several shooting sites, as was Italy. The music and score were created by Radhan and Harshvardhan Rameshwar, accordingly. The movie was edited by Shashank Mali and directed by Raj Thota.
The movie was released globally on August 25, 2017, on a budget of $50–51.5 million. It got good reviews for its directing, screenplay, photography, and cast performances, particularly Deverakonda’s, but it earned criticism for supposedly encouraging the younger generation to use drugs and for its love moments. The movie was a box office hit, making a total of 510 million dollars worldwide, including a distributor share of 260 million dollars. At the 65th Filmfare Awards South, it earned six nominations, including Best Telugu Film and Best Telugu Director for Vanga; the movie’s lone victory was Best Telugu Actor for Deverakonda. In Hindi, the movie was recreated as Kabir Singh (2019), while in Tamil, it was recreated twice as Adithya Varma (2019) and Varmaa (2020).
The Central Board of Film Certification gave Arjun Reddy a ‘A’ (adult) rating owing to the quantity of expletives and innuendoes. Vanga expressed his dissatisfaction with the board’s dismissive attitude toward his artistic endeavours. He contemplated drafting a letter to the board, inquiring as to what factors were examined prior to certification. The film’s makers had not submitted their advertising material for censorship before utilising it, according to the board.
The film’s distribution rights in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh were bought by Asian Cinemas and KFC Entertainments. In international markets, the picture was released by Nirvana Cinemas.
