K-pop

K-pop, or Korean popular music, is a type of music that originated in South Korea and is now a part of the country’s culture. On top of its traditional Korean music roots, it is influenced by styles and genres from all over the world, including pop, experimental, rock, jazz, gospel, hip hop, R&B, reggae, electronic dance, folk, country, and classical music. In 1992, one of the first K-pop groups, Seo Taiji and Boys, formed, ushering in a more contemporary incarnation of the genre. Their experimenting with various musical forms and genres, as well as the incorporation of foreign musical influences, contributed to the reshaping and modernization of South Korea’s contemporary music landscape.

Modern K-pop “idol” culture emerged in the 1990s when idol music evolved into such a subculture with the massive teen as well as young adult fandoms. Following a period of stagnation in early idol music, TVXQ and BoA launched a new generation of K-pop idols in 2003, breaking the genre through into the nearby Japanese market and continuing to popularise K-pop globally to this day.

The current spread of K-pop and South Korean entertainment, known as that of the Korean Wave, could be seen not only in East Asia and Southeast Asia, as well as in Pakistan, Bangladesh, India, Latin America, North Africa, Southern Africa, and East Africa, the Middle East, and throughout the Western world, as both a result of the advent of online social networking services as well as South Korean TV shows.

Inside the 2000s, the phrase “K-pop” gained widespread. South Korean pop music was once referred to as gayo. While “K-pop” is a broad word for popular music in South Korea, it is frequently applied to the genre defined below in a much more specific meaning. K-pop had substantial growth in 2018 and also was dubbed a “power player,” with a 17.9% rise in income.

According to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry’s “Global Music Report 2019,” is placed sixth among the top ten music markets globally as of 2019, with BTS as well as Blackpink highlighted as musicians spearheading the industry growth. K-pop had a record-breaking year in 2020, with a 44.8 per cent increase, making this the year’s fastest-growing major market.
