Rebel Wilson

Rebel Wilson was accused of lying about her real name, age, as well as a background in an article published inside the Australian magazine Woman’s Day in May 2015. Wilson had previously stated in interviews that she had been raised inside the ghetto of Sydney by “bogus” dog-training parents, spent a year in Zimbabwe, climbed into the cage with a leopard, was caught inside a shoot-out, and then was struck down by such a severe strain of malaria transmitted by such a mosquito in Mozambique, where she envisioned herself winning an Oscar and rapping her acceptance speech from her intensive care bed.

Her age was also wrongly reported as 29, which she subsequently admitted she did not alter. All of this was put into doubt by Woman’s Day, which claimed Wilson had done the opposite. Several other newspapers, such As the Sydney Morning Herald, People magazine, the Chicago Tribune, as well as the Huffington Post, took up the storey. Wilson’s exact birth date was confirmed by business papers filed well with the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC), which were obtained by The Sydney Morning Herald.

Rebel Wilson said that print and online stories in Woman’s Day, the Australian Women’s Weekly, NW, and OK! magazines painted her as a chronic liar on May 16, 2016. Wilson claimed that her character and credit had been harmed and that she had been humiliated as well as embarrassed inside a defamation writ filed inside the Supreme Court of Victoria. She also sought punitive damages, saying that the stories caused her to lose out on opportunities and that others were sacked as a result of the publications.

Matthew Collins QC was Wilson’s lawyer. A six-person jury found in Wilson’s favour on June 15, 2017, ruling that publisher Bauer Media Group had incorrectly depicted the actress as just a chronic liar and also that publishing the stories was likely to have harmed her career.

Rebel Wilson was granted A$4,500,000 in damages on September 13, 2017. “Today’s judgement is indeed a big record—almost it’s four times the largest-ever verdict in a defamation case in Australia,” Wilson’s lawyer Richard Leder said. “Any funds I earn would go to charity, scholarships, or put into to the Australian movie business to generate employment,” Wilson tweeted in June 2017.
