Talat Aziz has begun restoring his Mumbai home after an October 2 fire gutted much of it, and he hopes the family can return by January or February.

Talat Aziz hopes to move home by January after fire

Veteran ghazal singer and actor Talat Aziz is rebuilding after a fire broke out at his Mumbai residence on October 2. The blaze gutted the ground floor and parts of the first floor, hospitalised the family and destroyed paintings, musical instruments and other belongings loaded with memory.

Now staying at a friend’s apartment, the 69-year-old told Hindustan Times that restoration has already begun. Another close friend living abroad has offered the family a place to stay as well.

“Restoration has already begun. Hopefully, by January or February, we hope to move back into our own home.”

He credited wife Bina Aziz and their two sons for keeping the family steady through the upheaval.

Why this loss hits hard

Talat Aziz is an artist many grew up listening to. For a generation of ghazal lovers, his name carries a whole listening culture; for a newer audience, he is also the actor who played Hrithik Roshan’s father in the 2024 film Fighter. The items lost in the fire — paintings and musical instruments — were not just possessions but pieces of a creative life.

Still, he is choosing to frame the moment as a turning point rather than only a tragedy.

“Maybe this was a reset button in our lives for the better.”

The recovery timeline

  • October 2: A fire damages the home; the family is hospitalised.
  • Now: Restoration begins while the family stays at a friend’s apartment.
  • Early next year: Aziz hopes to move back into the family home by January or February.

The support from listeners and colleagues has been a major comfort. Aziz said the family has received thousands of messages from Mumbai, across India and around the world, and that he can never thank people enough. The most important detail, he added, is that everyone escaped without injuries.

What we can take from the reset

The phrase “reset button” is not about ignoring loss. It is about separating what is gone from what remains: family, safety, and a forward timeline. For readers who have followed Talat Aziz through albums and live concerts, the update is a reminder that support can be as simple as a message.

For fans, that is the hopeful core of the story: the voice behind the ghazals is safe, the family is coping, and the home is on its way back.
