Madhuri’s Husband Didn’t Know SRK, Salman at Wedding Reception
Dr Shriram Nene opens up about not recognising Shah Rukh Khan or Salman Khan at his 1999 wedding to Madhuri Dixit, and why her fame never mattered to him.

Bollywood weddings usually come with a guest list that reads like a Filmfare roll call. But when Dr Shriram Nene married Madhuri Dixit in 1999, he walked into a room full of stars he simply did not recognise.
Growing up on a different cinema
In a conversation with Farah Khan on her YouTube channel, Dr Nene said his childhood had been shaped by Steven Spielberg, George Lucas and Star Wars rather than Hindi films. When Farah asked if he had known Shah Rukh Khan or Salman Khan at the grand industry reception, he confirmed he had not.
The one famous face that stood out was Amitabh Bachchan, and only because he had watched Amar Akbar Anthony.
Three months, one proposal
Madhuri and Dr Nene met after her brother introduced them, and they dated for three months before he proposed. At the time, Madhuri was at the peak of her career, but Shriram says her stardom was never the basis of their connection.
- He told Farah Khan, “We just hit it off,” and proposed after dating for three months.
- At the reception, he said, it felt like Prom King: waving at everyone, but recognising almost no one.
- Madhuri married the cardiovascular surgeon on October 17, 1999.
Why this story works
For fans who measure a celebrity by their co-stars, this is a rare reversal: the biggest names in the room were unknown to the groom. For an audience that follows stars as closely as films, the anecdote is a reminder that not every Bollywood romance starts with two famous people recognising each other. It also makes the relationship feel more ordinary: a short courtship, a family introduction, and a proposal before the world had time to weigh in.
Becoming Mrs Nene in Denver
After the wedding, the couple moved to the United States and Madhuri stepped back from films to focus on family life. In an earlier interview with Hindustan Times, she described Denver as a quieter chapter: “I was Mrs Nene there.” The couple welcomed Arin in 2003 and Ryan in 2005.
Back in front of the camera
Madhuri has since returned to the screen. She was recently seen in Mrs Deshpande and in Maa Behen, alongside Triptii Dimri and Dharna Durga, and she currently hosts Kon Honar Crorepati. Her return keeps the contrast alive: the woman who was once anonymous in Denver is now back on Indian screens, but the wedding story remains a favourite because it is so rare in this industry.
